Funke Akindele, is a leading Nigerian actress, film producer, and director, who has solidified her dominance in the film and television industry across sub-Saharan Africa over a career spanning more than two decades. Her numerous industry firsts and outstanding success make her one of the most recognizable and respected figures on and off the big screen.
Her journey in television began in 1997 with the United Nations Population Fund-sponsored sitcom, "I Need to Know," which aired from 1998 to 2002, earning her a massive following in the countries where it aired. In 2008, she took the world by storm with her blockbuster movie "Jenifa," which became a popular franchise. Funke's most iconic contribution to Nigerian television is the TV series "Jenifa's Diaries." Debuting in 2015, the show has since become a cultural phenomenon with over 25 seasons. It has not only captivated audiences but also served as a platform for emerging talent, creating well-known television and film stars today.
Her impact extends far beyond television, earning her the title "Queen of the Box Office" in Nollywood. She holds the top three spots on the list of highest-grossing Nollywood movies of all time. "A Tribe Called Judah" made history as the first Nollywood film to cross the billion-naira milestone at the box office, while "Battle on Buka Street" grossed over N660 million, solidifying its position as the second highest-grossing Nollywood movie. Additionally, "Omo Ghetto; The Saga" achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the third highest-grossing Nollywood movie, grossing about N470 million within its first four weeks.
Funke's creative genius extends to directing and producing the acclaimed five-part television miniseries, "She Must Be Obeyed," distributed by Amazon's Prime Video. Her filmography includes other notable titles like "Maami," "Iru Oka," "A Trip to Jamaica," "Isoken," "Moms at War," "Your Excellency," and "Chief Daddy."
For her remarkable work, Funke is now the most nominated filmmaker in the history of The Africa Magic Viewer's Choice Awards, and has received numerous local and international awards, including the Special Achievement Award at the 2023 Silverbird Man of the Year Award, and the Globe Award Honoree at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival. She received the Best Actress in a Comedy, at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards 2020.
Beyond her cinematic achievements, Funke's impact transcends entertainment. She ventured into politics as the Lagos State deputy governorship candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 gubernatorial elections. She also heads the Funke Akindele Network Limited, collaborating with renowned brands such as WAW, Molfix Baby Diapers, Kellogg's Nigeria, Keystone Bank, and Dettol.
